My husband and I are together for over 10 years now. I am 30 years old, yes; I got wedded when I was 20 years old. Young, huh? Anyway, for the past 10 years, I was not focusing on my body, I was focused on my family and I did not recognize that I have already gained a lot of weight. I used to weight 120 lbs and now, after 10 years, I already weigh 165 lbs so I gained 45 pounds.

Do You Have High Blood Pressure?

We all know someone with high blood pressure (HBP), possibly a beloved family member or a lifelong friend. This common problem affects one in four American adults.1 It is alarming that 75% of patients with type 2 diabetes also have HBP.2

High blood pressure is particularly dangerous because, for the most part, there are no symptoms until severe damage occurs. Heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, atherosclerosis, and eye disease are some of the serious problems that may result from untreated HBP.

Normal blood pressure is in the range of 120/80 ("120 over 80"). The first number represents the systolic pressure, the pressure at which your heart pumps blood into your arteries. The second number represents the diastolic pressure, the pressure in your arteries between heart beats (the resting pressure). The systolic pressure can increase in response to stress or physical activity. Systolic pressures over 140 and diastolic pressures over 90 suggest the possibility of HBP. Blood pressure readings should be repeated several times, over a period of several days, before a diagnosis of HBP is considered.

Medical treatment for HBP consists of blood pressure-lowering medications (antihypertensives). This group of drugs is typically effective in reducing pressure, but getting the dosages right may be complicated and there may be unwelcome side effects.

Lifestyle strategies and activities (complementary medicine, lifestyle medicine) offer significant, well-documented benefits in reducing blood pressure levels. Frequent exercise is an important part of all lifestyle programs targeted toward lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.3,4 Regular exercise makes your heart stronger, and a stronger heart pumps blood more easily and efficiently. Over time, regular exercise may reduce blood pressure levels by an average of 10mm.

Heat works by increasing blood flow, easing muscle tension and decreasing hip joint inflammation. Heat can be applied by using an electric heating pad or heat wraps. Head Lice - Lousy Little Parasitic Insects!

INTRODUCTION: Head lice (Pediculus capitis) are tiny parasitic insects well adapted to living mostly on the scalp and neck hairs of human host. These are mainly gotten by direct head-to-head contact with an infested person's hair, but may on rare occasions be transferred with shared combs, hats and other hair accessories.

They get their nutrients by blood-feeding once or twice each day, and cannot survive for more than a day or so at room temperature without ready access to human blood. These parasites can survive up to 30 days on a human holding on to hair with hook-like claws found at the end of each of their six legs. They are rarely found on the body, eyelashes, or eyebrows and rarely (if ever) cause direct harm, or transmit infectious agents from person-to-person. Head lice are equal opportunity parasites that do not respect socio-economic class distinctions and can infest people of all ages, but children are prone to infestations because of their habit of playing in close contact, sharing hats, headphones, combs and brushes, sleeping bags, stuffed animals, and clothing.

NITS: Head lice eggs are named nits and are laid by the adult female at the base of the hair shaft nearest the scalp with an appearance sort of like dandruff, only they can't be removed by brushing or shaking them off. The eggs hatch approximately 7 to 11 days after being laid. Nits further than 1/4 inch away from the scalp have likely already hatched. Nits are most effectively removed by combing the hair with a specially designed nit comb. The nits can be distinguished from dandruff flakes as they are extremely adherent to the hair shaft, whereas dandruff can be very easily moved along the hair shaft.

INFESTATION: Contact with an already infested person is the most usual way to acquire head lice. Less frequently, Wearing clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons, recently worn by an infested person. There are four crucial steps to controlling an infestation: the use of an effective head louse medication; nit removal from the head (combing); removal of lice and nits from the household environment by vacuuming, washing, or freezing objects suspected of infestation; and daily head inspections and nit removal until infestation is gone, followed by weekly head checks to detect re-infestation. The physician should be able to inform you if your child is infested with lice and needs to be treated.

TREATMENT: Treatment should be considered ONLY when active lice or viable eggs are seen. A treatment can produce significant side effects in children younger than 6 months old, the elderly, and anybody weighing less than 110 pounds (50 kg), especially when it is used repeatedly over a short period of time. If your child is two years old or under, you should not use medications. Your child's MD may suggest repeating treatment in 7 to 10 days to make sure all the nits have been killed and to avoid any opportunity for reinfestation. Treatments may be over-the-counter or prescription medications, depending on what has already been used. It isn't uncommon for treatments to be unsuccessful because of improper use or because the lice may be resistant to the chemical in the shampoo. Following the directions on the product label is also necessary to ensure that the it works properly.

Medicated shampoos can usually kill the lice and nits, but it may take a few days for the itching to stop. Some don'ts include: Don't use a hair dryer on your child's hair after applying any of the currently available scalp shampoos, because some contain flammable ingredients. Don't wash your child's hair for 1 to 2 days after using a medicated shampoo. Be patient and follow the protocol and preventative tips as directed by your child's doctor for keeping the bugs at bay, and you'll be well on your way to keeping your family lice-free.

If you feel like you're following every recommendation and your child still has lice, it may be because of one or more of the following: there are still some nits left behind, your child is still being exposed to someone with lice, the shampoo you're using isn't effective. If your child still has lice for 2 weeks after you started treatment or if your child's scalp looks infected (with pus or sores), call your child's doctor. Vacuuming the carpets, upholstery, and car seats will take care of any lice that fell off before treatment.

CONCLUSION: Head lice infect hair on the head and are more common in close, overcrowded living conditions. Infestation causes intense itching, but does not lead to a serious medical problem. They can be spread when infested hair brushes or combs are shared or when infested bedding, towels or shower caps are shared. Head lice is an increasing problem because lice-killing medicines are becoming less effective. Each year, between 6 and 12 million people worldwide become infested. Children ages 3-11 and their families become infested most often. Pets are of no significance in transmitting human lice, and should not be treated.

In one study, the estimated yearly cost of infestations in the USA was nearly $1 billion dollars. Girls get head lice more often than boys; women more frequently than men. Anyone can become infested and the presence of head lice is not the result of poor habits. Although it can be challenging to eliminate, you must be steadfast and persistent when dealing with an infestation.

Buy The Right Temperature Sleeping Bag

If there is one thing to consider when buying your next sleeping bag, I say its all about temperature. Get the right range! If the forecast says its going to be warm during the day and then cool off overnight, find out how cold cool off really is, then buy the sleeping bag that is good to 20 degrees below that!

Two years ago, my husband and I decided to get a bigger boat (a common problem with boaters) and we found one in late October that was perfect. It was kept at a marina a few hours West of where we live, so we decided to bring it home by driving it down river, more cost effective than having it trailered. However, the boat had no heater.

So we knew it was time to buy warmer sleeping bags. I checked a few forecasts to see how cool it might get overnight and found the average to be around 45 degrees. I researched my sleeping bag options on-line, and found a wealth of information. So many sleeping bags to choose from, with so many choices to make!

So, I picked a pretty blue one from Mountain Hardwear called Sunrise for just under $200.00 that was good to 50F. I didn't really consider my options at that time, but now I wish I had noticed, similar sleeping bags in the same price range and slightly more expensive were available that were good right down to 5 and even to -40F.

But no, I went with color and completely regretted the decision that night. Arriving at the marina to pick up our boat in the early morning, the temperature was in the mid 60s and we enjoyed a lovely day cruise down river. We ended up on one of our favorite islands near Brockville, Ontario and had a nice meal just as the sun was setting.

Darkness came early and we knew we'd have an early start, so after a quick tour of the island to let our dog do his business, we made our beds in the aft cabin and were asleep by 10:00 p.m. A few hours after midnight, our dog woke me up and when my feet touched the floor, it felt like there was ice in the cabin!

I quickly ushered the dog into the cabin then dove back into my sleeping bag, but I swear my feet didn't warm up all night - it was miserable. I didn't even have the benefit of my husbands warmth, because he was all bound up in his own misery right next to me.

We found out the next day that the temperature dropped to around 25 overnight. First order of business that day, buy a portable heater! And my advice to all sleeping bag buyers: buy a sleeping bag that's good to 20 degrees lower than you think you'll need - you'll be happy you did!

A serving of protein is the size of a deck of cards, not a 16 or 24-ounce steak. Eating too much protein is difficult on the digestive system as well as the kidneys. Enjoy the protein, but once again enjoy it in moderation.

Those Who Think They Can't Lose Weight, Have A Rethink

Can't lose weight? Or think you can't lose weight, then maybe you need to re-evaluate your thinking on this. Everyone should be able to lose weight. It's not impossible.

I was convinced I would eternally be overweight, that I simply can't lose weight. How wrong I was!

I went for years just yo-yoing up and down with my weight. Mostly up but some downs. I was all of a sudden diagnosed with diabetes.

I wondered if my being fat was the cause but I think I'll never know the reason. I'll tell you though it really scared me.

27 years old and diabetic. But worse in my eyes was I had what was termed "age onset diabetes", what older people get.

Time to do something about my weight properly this time. No half hearted attempts to lose a few pounds. I had to change my way of thinking on this one.

Like most "fatties" I tried all sorts of diets and gizmos. Some of the stuff was sickeningly expensive and turned out to be next to useless. I shudder at how much money I've thrown away.

What I found was a step by step system that allows me to plan my day and my meals. I can plan meals of a decent size that aren't going to leave me hungry.

My system has an online diet generator that really takes the stress out of planning my meals. What's worse than trying to work out just what you can and can't eat safely?

I was terrible when it came to the weekend. If I'd managed to drop a pound or two I'd end up rewarding myself and undoing any progress I'd made through the week. Talk about vicious circle.

Many people who are suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome first imagine that the only way they can get relief is through surgery. As the month approaches, I am resolved that this food will be set aside for the month. When the first of the month comes, I am "psyched up" and ready to go.

If you can include sugars in your diet, it will be all the more effective. If it is going to be too much of a strain, just concentrate on the main item. You can do a similar number on sugars in another month.

What this will do, once you arrive at the end of the month successfully, is give you confidence that you are able to manage without that food. And theres no reason why you cant continue another month, or a year. But the point of the month is, its a manageable length of time. Most of us can go without just about anything for the space of a month. And its long enough to give us confidence that we can make long-term changes to our eating habits. One thing that I like about this sort of diet is, I am looking forward to the end of the month when, as I tell myself, I will be able to enjoy that food again " it helps to keep me going.

Now I can still continue the diet past the end of the month, but because my immediate plans are just until the end of the month, I can handle it " its no big deal. I can decide if I want to continue at that stage, and of course it will not be that difficult to go on " there is a certain momentum built up over the course of the month, that I can make use of.

Physical Fitness Mandatory in Schools means Safer Gyms are Mandatory in Schools

Schools throughout the majority of the nation now require physical education. In fact, forty-two states make physical education class mandatory to graduate. What is the result of the emphasis on physical fitness, besides taking a stab at the growing obesity issue among our young? A high occurrence of sports related accidents and even death. What happens to those students who are obese and required to participate in sports?

Imagine a three hundred and twenty seven pound student running up and down the court for twenty minutes in a hot gym without being given the opportunity for water breaks. The regular physical education teacher was out and the class was being supervised by an art teacher. The art teacher was apparently in pretty good physical shape since he played basketball with the students. The three hundred twenty pound student continued playing and after twenty minutes, collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead.

Another trend in schools right now is the frequency of substitute teachers. The student that has a health issue gives the regular teacher the doctors note excusing the student from activity, but the substitute teacher who doesn't physically see the "note" requires the student to participate. This irresponsible supervision results in catastrophe.

How many more cases of students dying or suffering brain damage or spinal accidents do we have to read about? Pad all areas in the gym that a student could possibly make contact with. When a student's skull slams into a concrete wall, it most certainly will be a devastating impact. Today schools use their gymnasium a lot more than they used to, so schools need to pad more than just a 12 foot backstop. This seems like an obvious responsible answer.

If you have a headache, you're not alone. Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Most are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea.

Research shows that spinal manipulation - the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic - may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that start in the neck.

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal adjustments resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.

Also, a 1995 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication.

Headache Triggers But to get to the bottom of the problem, you first need to find out what is causing your discomfort. Headaches have many causes, or "triggers." This results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) - the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull - leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches. In addition, the ACA and its Council on Nutrition suggest you avoid the following food "triggers":

Avoid caffeine. Foods such as chocolate, coffee, sodas and cocoa contain excess levels of the stimulant. Avoid foods with a high salt or sugar content. These foods may cause migraines, resulting in sensitivity to light, noise, or abrupt movements. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. These drinks can dehydrate you and cause headache pain. Other headache sufferers may want to avoid not only caffeine, but also high-protein foods, dairy products, red meat and salty foods. What Can a Doctor of Chiropractic Do? For most aspiring lifters, it's all about building a huge chest and arms. Week after week they slave away on endless sets of bench presses and barbell curls in search of the rippling muscle gains they want so badly. Not surprisingly, those gains never appear in any significant form.

It's obvious why most lifters neglect the back muscles. 1) The back is not a "showy" muscle and you can't see it in the mirror. 2) Back training is far more stressful and taxing to the body than chest or arm training. 3) Most lifters are simply unaware of how important the development of these muscles really is.

70% of your upper body muscle mass resides in the back area! Nothing can replace the upper body thickening effect of big, bulging lats and a set of wide, tall trapezius muscles. That's how important your back is. I am, of course, talking about the major muscles of the back: the lats, traps, spinal erectors, rhomboids and lower back.

If you want to succed and have a wide back, just follow these simple steps.

1) Deadlifts. I cannot possibly stress the importance of this lift enough. There is not a single exercise out there that can even come close to matching the effectiveness of a basic, bent-legged barbell deadlift. The deadlift will stimulate growth throughout the entire back complex and should be the cornerstone of your routine.

2) A vertical pulling movement. These exercises mainly target the lat muscles and will help you to attain that wide, v-tapered look from behind. You can try with lat pulldowns, v-bar pulldowns and chin-ups.

3) Horizontal pulling movement. There are a ton of different rowing movements to choose from: bent over barbell rows, dumbbell rows, seated machine rows and cable rows just to name a few.

4) A shrugging movement. A basic barbell or dumbbell shrug will be enough for this part. Why is it necessary to perform this movement after your workout? To develop that mountainous, diamond-shaped look from behind.

Okay, let's put it all together Deadlifts - 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps. Overhand Chin-Ups - 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps. Bent Over Barbell Rows - 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps. Barbell Shrugs - 2 Sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Perform this workout once per week with full effort and I guarantee that your upper body will appear thicker, wider and more muscular than ever before.

Do you want to lose weight? If so, there is a good chance that you have taken a look at the Weight Watchers point system. There are a lot of success stories out there, but it is also important to remember that there is no system that works well for everyone.

That is the case with all weight loss systems however, there isn't a perfect match for every single person.
